Scaphites Parkinson 1811
Albien supérieur à Campanien.
Formes comprimées à très renflées. Spire plus ou moins involute. Tours initiaux en contact. Hampe courte à moyenne. Crochet n’enveloppant pas la spire. Ouverture constrictée à colerette commune, portant une longue apophyse dorsale chez certaines espèces. Côtes de la spire alternant généralement longues et courtes, ou divisées. Côtes de la hampe simples ou divisées, généralement à partir d’un tubercule latéro-ventral. Tubercules ombilicaux et latéro-ventraux pouvant être présents sur la hampe et la crosse.
Scaphitinae Gill 1871
Albien supérieur à Maastrichtien supérieur.
Groupe potentiellement polyphylétique constitué de deux lignées convergentes : l’une (Eoscaphites, Scaphites pars., Hoploscaphites, etc.) probablement issue des Worthoceras albiens, l’autre (Scaphites pars., Clioscaphites et un groupe de genres endémiques nord-américains) pouvant être issue de Yezoites infra-turoniens d’Amérique du Nord.
Microconques sans apophyses ou seulement dorsales. Rebord interne de la hampe généralement concave et fermant moins l’ombilic que chez le macroconque.

Scaphitoidea très dimorphiques, avec ou sans apophyses chez les microconques. Le bord interne de la hampe a tendance à masquer l’ombilic des macroconques.
Scaphitoidea Meek 1876
Albien supérieur à Maastrichtien.
Formes enroulées en spirale lâche à serrée, suivie d’une hampe longue à courte et d’une crosse terminale qui peut envelopper la spire. L’ornementation est variable, de pratiquement absente jusqu’à présenter de fortes côtes et plusieurs rangées de tubercules. Les sutures quinquélobées chez les formes anciennes deviennent ensuite quadrilobées, mais présentent des "pseudolobes" chez les genres les plus récents, correspondant à des lobes auxiliaires au sein de la selle U/L. Le lobe latéral est bifide ou trifide.

Scaphites warreni est index de zone dans le Turonien supérieur basal du membre supérieur de Carlile où elle est accompagnée par Prionocyclus wyomingensis (Sealey & Lucas 2019). Elle précède Scaphites ferronensis COBBAN et Scaphites whitfieldi COBBAN.
Parmi les petites formes du Colorado group à loge d’habitation adulte bien détachée (Cobban 1951, p 2), l’évolution de l’ornementation de cette dernière permet souvent un premier tri des espèces. Scaphites warreni est basée sur des macroconques assez robustes, dont la taille adulte varie entre 29 et 47 mm, avec une moyenne à 35,2. La loge d’habitation est ornée de fortes côtes primaires (6 à 13, avec une moyenne à 8,4) et de nombreuses côtes secondaires plus faibles (27 à 41, avec une moyenne à 34,2), qui sont plus denses sur la crosse que sur la hampe. Ce dernier caractère est partagé avec d’autres espèces, la plus proche étant Scaphites ferronensis COBBAN 1951, dont la costulation secondaire est cependant plus dense et les côtes primaires moins nombreuses sur la chambre, la crosse étant souvent lisse. Une forme robuste extrême, Scaphites warreni var. haydeni COBBAN 1951, possède 4 côtes primaires et 30 secondaires sur la loge. La forme microconque est représentée par Scaphites warreni var. ubiquitosus COBBAN 1951, dont la taille adulte varie entre 20 et 31 mm. Elle possède 5 à 9 primaires (moyenne à 7,4) sur la loge et 27 à 44 secondaires (moyenne à 35). Par rapport aux espèces plus anciennes, la ligne de suture est simplifiée, avec des selles larges, peu incisées et des lobes courts. [d’après Cobban 1951, Kennedy & al. 1989]
